Since 1991 in Toronto's Harbourfront, Great Lakes Schooner Company enjoy's the reputation as a tourism industry leader in innovative product and customer service. GLSC is a corporate charter company which also operates educational programs and day sails. The company acts as ship's agents for vessels in Toronto Harbour and beyond. It also owns and operates the tall ships Challenge, a 96 foot, three-masted schooner and Kajama, a 165' three-masted gaff -rigged schooner.

Position 1 : Food and Beverage Supervisors
(Full time summer) -1 position

Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Manage, oversee, and help train employees
  • Supervise the day to day operations of bar and catering. This includes inventory, ordering and opening and closing of daily accounts
  • Customer Service Management – directly trouble shooting problem areas and ensuring customer satisfaction.

Qualifications:

  • Must have extensive food and beverage experience
  • Must have strong people and problem solving skills, and customer service experience
  • Must be able to work independently and a quick learner

Position 2 : Cooks
(Full time summer) - 3 positions

Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Prepare meals for private cruises (40-500 people) as well as limited menu for public daytours.
  • Keep inventory and receive deliveries.
  • Maintain kitchen to health board standards

Qualifications:

  • Must have at least 3 years education or practical food experience
  • Must have knowledge of Toronto’s food preparation standards
  • Must be able to work independently in a busy environment

Position 3 : Assistant Cruise Coordinator
(Full time summer) - 2 positions

Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Monitor, maintain, and communicate with clients regarding cruise details
  • Dealing with catering staff about preparation of menus and themes
  • Maintaining cruise accounts receivables and payables (Excel, Word, ACT all helpful)

Qualifications:

  • Must have at least 2 years experience in hospitality/tourism program
  • Must have strong computer skills, working knowledge of accounting, and communication skills, and ability to up sell
  • Must have superior organizational and telephone skills and knowledge of food and beverage is a plus

Position 4 : Day Tour Manager
(Full time summer) - 1 position

Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Manage, oversee, and train up to 10 employees
  • Supervise the day to day operations of day tours. This includes staff scheduling, inventory, and opening and closing of daily accounts
  • Run sales incentive program to ensure day tours are reaching targets
  • Maintain weekly contact with hotel concierges and set up promotional tours

Qualifications:

  • Must have at least 2 years experience in hospitality/tourism program
  • Must have strong people skills, customer service experience, and willingness to work long hours outside

Position 5 : Dock Staff
(Full time summer) - 4 positions

Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Ticket sales to groups and individuals on a regular basis
  • To aid in the preparation and implementation of daily activities, such as merchandise
  • Additional Hours available may provide Food & Beverage Experience for those interested

Qualifications:

  • Strong people skills and able to work outside in a team atmosphere
  • Great for 1st year students who have a willingness to move up within the company over the years of your program

Position 6 : Disc Jockeys
(Full time summer) - 2 positions

Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Entertain a wide range of clients from corporate functions to weddings

Qualifications:

  • A broad knowledge of popular music in past and present
  • Good speaking voice with ability to MC
  • Great for people who want experience in this profession
  • Technically inclined (knowledge of sound systems)

Position 7 : Waiters/Waitresses
(Full time summer) - 7 positions

Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Cocktail service and bussing onboard
  • Maintain weekly inventory

Qualifications:

  • Strong people skills and able to work in a team atmosphere
  • Smart Serve qualification is preferred
  • Efficient cash management is a must
  • Great for 1st year students who have a willingness to move up within the company over the years of your program

Position 8 : Bartenders
(Full time summer) - 6 positions

Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Wide range of cocktail knowledge

Qualifications:

  • Strong people skills and able to work in a team atmosphere
  • Smart Serve or equivalent qualification is necessary
  • Efficient cash management is a must
  • Great for 1st year students who have a willingness to move up within the company over the years of your program

Position 9 : Deckhands
(Full time summer) - 5 positions

Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Helping caterers setup and tear down food stations
  • Maintenance of Traditional Sailing Ships under Captain's supervision
  • Sailing the ships during day and evening functions
  • Assisting in teaching during May/June with elementary school program
  • Customer Service - Candidates are directly responsible for ensuring product quality and customer satisfaction.

Qualifications:

  • Strong people skills and able to work in a team atmosphere
  • Sailing experience is a plus
  • Food and beverage experience is needed
  • Any year may apply

Great Lakes Schooner Company is now hiring for the summer season.

Deckhands

Serving on one or both of our three masted schooners, deckhands will be required to engage in all manner of deck work including, setting and dousing of sails, mooring and departing, maintenance etc. In addition to marine duties, deckhands will be required to deliver our 1 ½ hour shipboard education programs in the months of May and June. In the summer months duties will include service to evening charter guests and daysail passengers.

Deckhand/Engineer

This position requires an individual to divide their time equally between deckhand duties (as described above) and basic marine engineering. This position requires an individual with some experience and aptitude for working with marine diesel engines and vessel systems.

Mate

Serving aboard the Kajama, this position requires an experienced mariner with a minimum Mate Over 60 Tons certificate. The ideal candidate will have traditional rig sailing experience and practical understanding of vessel systems. Duties will include vessel handling, crew management, vessel maintenance, and dealing with the general public.


Applicants for these positions are expected to have the basic skills necessary for day-to-day ship operations, an aptitude and enthusiasm for traditional sailing, a positive attitude, and experience dealing with the general public. All positions are seasonal: May - Sept.

Great Lakes Schooner Company owns and operates two three masted schooners, the 96ft Challenge, and the 164ft Kajama. Sailing from Toronto's Harbourfront our vessels do daysails for the ticket buying public, education programs for secondary school students, and evening corporate charters.
